Collab-beer-ation project bringing craft brewers & mountain bikers together!

Collaboration beers have become increasingly prominent in the craft brewing world. The idea behind these “collabs” is straightforward: breweries work together to create a new brew, but the magic really happens when that collab extends to include a community group. In this case, mountain bikers. There’s a natural fit between craft breweries and mountain bikers. Why? Mountain bikers naturally gravitate toward local brews, sharing a love of craft beer.

Inspired by the Dusty Rider beer collaboration between Holy Whale Brewing and Les Dusty Ladies women+ mountain biking group based in the Moncton area, Mountain Bike Atlantic approached NB Brews – NBCAPA in Fall of 2020 to invite local craft brewers across New Brunswick to collaborate on mountain biking inspired brews with their local group of choice!

 

 

She’s the Bosc

Brewery: Foghorn Brewing Company

Mountain Biking Group: Queens of Carnage

With a name like Queens of Carnage, it’s a given that the members of that crew will come up with a name that alludes to the level of badassery that mountain biking requires. The fact that it’s a pun referencing the Bosc pears in the brew makes it even better!

Foghorn and Queens of Carnage brewed a mild ale – it’s a style that has low ABV to offer something refreshing and unique that hits the spot after a strenuous ride.

Insanity Later Sessional IPA

Brewery: Graystone Brewing

Mountain Biking Group: Mountain Bike Minto

The signature trail in Minto is the inspiration behind this IPA. According to Graystone Brewing, it’s the best trail system in Atlantic Canada – and with a trail named Insanity Later, we’re inclined to agree with them.

Sirène

Breweries: Brasseux d’la Côte, Microbrasserie Houblon-Pêcheur, Brasserie Retro, Distillerie Fils du Roy

Mountain Biking Group: Sirènes en cavales

No less than four breweries in the Acadian Peninsula – and a group of mountain biking women who swear they’re not actual mermaids – partnered up to create Sirène, a Vienna Acadienne made with fresh local barley and malted on the Peninsula. The name was inspired by the mountain biking group’s name, which was itself conceived as an homage to the fishing and water sports that are abundant near their local trails.

Sentiers Madawaska Trails

Brewery: Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault

This brew with grisette, cherry, cranberry and hibiscus is perfect for summer.

Monkey Business Session IPA

Brewery: Grimross Brewing Co.

Mountain Biking Group: River Valley Cycling

It’s all fun and games with this Session IPA – its name was inspired by a popular trail in the Kennebecasis Valley. River Valley Cycling helped design the label on this one!

Gnar She Gose

Breweries: Big Axe Brewery and Hammond River Brewing

Mountain Biking Group: Becaguimec Trail Association

For this lime gose variety, Becaguimec Trail Association turned to a Sixpence None the Richer song for naming inspiration. It’s an instant classic.

Bunny Hop

Brewery: Gahan House Port City

Mountain Biking Group: Be Rad Adventure Co

Who doesn’t love a good brew pun? This hazy session ale gets its name from a mountain biking maneuver – and of course, the hops that’s the star of the brew.

LBS Kolsch

Brewery: Sussex Ale Works

Mountain Biking Group: Outdoor Elements Cycling Club

LBS stands for Local Bike Shop – the perfect place for cyclists to meet up before and after a bike run. This kolsch makes for light, easy drinking – it’s the perfect post-run refreshment.

Klunker

Brewery: Long Bay Brewery

Mountain Biking Group: Saint John Cycling and The Trail Miners

The Trail Miners are a group of people who build mountain bike trails locally, and have been working in Rockwood Park on a huge extended trail system – which also happens to have Long Bay Brewery as an official beer sponsor!

A few of the Trail Miners joined in on the brew day – and for naming inspiration, they looked to the early inception of downhill mountain bikes from California. In the 1990s, there was a group of people who would put big tires on cruiser style bikes and would take wild downhill rides on service roads. These klunkers live on as mountain bikes today – so this brew name is a fitting tribute to the origins of the sport.
